Fernando Ondarza and Jorge Alberto Lozoya were recently in Nepal, where they discovered an interesting atelier specialized in the production of handmade paper. The Peacock Shop is a small establishment in the city of Bhaktapur, where paper is derived from the bark of Lokta (Daphne cannabina) growing in the high mountains of this spectacular country, birthland 2,500 ago of Prince Sidartha Gautama Budha.

According to tradition the bark is cooked, washed and beaten into a soft pulp, which is then spread and sundried over netted frames. The shop is managed by Ram Narayan Prajapati, a gentle school teacher; his wife Aparan is the proprietor. Their young and talented son Suyog, who studies chemistry and biogenetics, updates the hand technology applied. He also writes and designs some of the books that the shop publishes, with a variety of charming paper products.
